Genius Loci: MTY is the outcome of a three-week intensive workshop led by Rodolfo Agrella at CEDIM in Monterrey, Mexico, as part of the World Class Educators program. Centered on the concept of Memory and Place, the workshop invited Interior Architecture and Fashion Design students to explore the spirit of Monterrey through performance, music, and design.
Rooted in the philosophical notion of Genius Loci—the "Spirit of a Place"—students reflected on personal memories tied to the region's geography and social dynamics. These memories were distilled into gestures, words, and ultimately transformed into stage devices and costumes.
The 7 acts performance had the support of local contemporary dancers, the stage direction of Mayra Vargas, award-winning theater director from Monterrey, articulated with the soundscape design by Alberto Stangaronne, Sunsplash, all directed by Rodolfo Agrella. Presented at Teatro San Pedro and Teatro de la Ciudad, as part of the International Theater Festival of Santa Lucia, Monterrey.
The performance featured seven symbolic guardians representing Monterrey’s forces—economic, geographical, and cultural—brought to life through choreography, custom-built props, curated lighting, and a soundscape blending traditional and contemporary local sounds.
