Terracotta Blocks
BackPD.092. Terracotta Blocks

Currently in development in collaboration with Ladrillos de México, a family-run terracotta brick cooperative in Cholula, this modular hollow block system reimagines the traditional ventilation brick as a contemporary architectural surface, designed to modulate light, airflow, and privacy, bridging vernacular tradition and contemporary fabrication.

The system comprises three design families, each offering a dynamic range of formats and compositions, enabling endless applications across both indoor and outdoor environments. While deeply rooted in local craftsmanship, the production process integrates innovation through the use of 3D-printed molds, allowing for new geometries to be shaped using regionally sourced clay and traditional wet-forming and kiln-firing.

More than 57 artisan families contribute to the making of each piece, reinforcing the project’s commitment to cultural preservation and community-driven production. A final layer of glazed finishes, adapted from shingle-glazing methods, adds depth, durability, and vibrant color, enhancing the system’s resilience to extreme weather conditions.
